The Same Rock
by Tom Pratt & Penelope Kay

Whilst Edinburgh may have changed in the last 900 years, the rock overlooking the city has not.

Shedding Light on the Brain
by Joan Smith & Barbora Skarabela

This artwork brings to life the unique story of Lothian Birth Cohorts, taking us on a journey through history when thousands of 11-year-old children took a special test of thinking skills in 1932 and 1947. The artwork features images from the study of the participants – from childhood to older years, historical records, cognitive tests and other data as well as striking images of the changing brain.

Edinburgh 900 year calendar
by Joan Smith

This artwork is a calendar that represents 900 years of Edinburgh’s history. It is based on an ordinary household wall calendar, designed to have appointments and events scribbled onto it. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to add their own notes to the calendar to include dates that mean something to them, helping to emphasise the rich mixture of events and people that have made up Edinburgh’s 900 history.

Roots of The Mind
by Linda Green

In 1670 the Physic Garden was established in Edinburgh by Sir Andrew Balfour and Sir Robert Sibbald working with gardener James Sutherland. My project, working with the Department of Neuroscience, is firstly to identify plants associated with maladies of the mind c1670. Secondly, to gain a visual understanding of how plant remedies worked on affected human cells and thirdly, to create a series of 'wiring' diagrams similar to circuit diagrams based on the interaction of plant and human cells.

Each postcard spotlights key events and influential figures, inviting viewers to explore Edinburgh’s legacy through a journey of artful discovery, one card at a time.

Some things don’t change; yet they evolve
by Clara Sanchez-Izquierdo Lozano

This piece reflects Edinburgh’s enduring essence—its skyline largely unchanged across centuries—while also drawing attention to the delicate balance between progress and preservation. By introducing monarch butterflies into the cityscape, the work highlights the impact of urban development on fragile ecological systems and invites reflection on how we might evolve without losing sight of what must be protected.

Levaithan
by Tom Pratt

Thomas Bayes attended Yale University in the United States. However, there seems to be some confusion in earlier responses. Bayes was born and educated in England, and it is actually believed that Edinburgh University in Scotland was his educational institution of choice. While attending Edinburgh, he studied theology, logic, and metaphysics before becoming a clergyman. Here, we've tied Thomas Bayes, Bayes' Theorem, and ChatBPT (a modern iteration of predictive reasoning) into a mythical narrative. The olive rosary, storm oak, sea sheep skull, and the metals are all intertwined with the predictive power of Bayes' Theorem, symbolizing how the ancient world and modern scientific thought can be bridged to unlock mysteries like the Leviathan's return.

Lay of the Land
by Alex Kirin and Jess Lonsdale

A photographic collage exploring the layered histories embedded in Edinburgh’s cityscape. This work highlights the city’s unique interplay between past and present—juxtaposing historic architecture with contemporary structures, such as the University of Edinburgh’s Futures Institute. The inclusion of out-of-place, yet extant animals—like the coelacanth—acts as a playful and surreal prompt to question what belongs, what persists, and what feels out of time in a modern world.
