‘Hippocampus’
by Jiayi Chen, Dora Zoi

‘Hippocampus’ is a work about forgotten memory with unforgotten love.
This complex brain structure has a major role in learning and memory. Connected with the amygdala, which controls emotional memory recalling and regulation, the hippocampus is a key brain region in the emotional brain network. Jiayi is inspired by her personal experiences and aims to communicate how her grandma experiences Alzheimer’s disease. The pictures were taken several years ago when her grandpa passed away. They depict how she was crying for him. She remembered nothing but his name and her children.

‘Memories of Childhood’
by Gintare Bagacionkaite, Richard Ribchester

Close your eyes and imagine how, upon hearing a single musical tone, you may be transported via childhood memories to a place and a period, when a beloved nursery rhyme or lullaby may have enlightened or soothed you.
This piece, which emerged from the discussion in our collaborative art-science FUSION group, utilises an Arduino Uno, programmed in C++, to represent and control a simple circuit that simulates five interconnected neurons: a retinal photoreceptor and an auditory sensory neuron, connected via respective interneurons, converging on a higher-order output neuron. Integration of inputs from the two interneurons control the pattern of activity encoded in the output neuron.
The piece is abstract, rather than realistic, but aims nevertheless to emulate and evoke shared experiences embedded in our individual brains.
Use the mask and tuning forks to discover the specific, convergent conditions that evoke the mystery of a delightful, universally familiar tune.

‘Every Brain creates its own Reality’ & ‘My Friend’s Voice’
by Maike Preißing

As a synesthete, I always had very colourful, abstract dreams at night. People would appear as objects, textures or shapes in my mind's eye. It makes perfect sense while it's happening but not after I woke up. With my dream series, I try to replicate the art my brain comes up with during the night.

Auditory-Visual synesthesia is a form of synesthesia where sounds, music and voices appear visually in someone's mind's eye. Whenever there is an auditory input the hyperconnectivity between brain areas leads to an immediate and involuntary reaction in a different part of the brain. This artwork shows what the voice of my friend Kassandra looks like to me.
